How to Repair Broken Fog Lights

 Fog lights are used to enhance the driver's visibility while driving in bad weather. The reason most manufactures install these types of lamps on vehicles is to aid the driver's view in rain, snow and fog, hence the name—fog lamps. The beam color is available in either amber or white.

Component Damage:
Changing the Light Bulb
One may have to lie on the ground and reach up into the front bumper behind the fog lamp. Some vehicles may have a protective shroud on the underside of the bumper. Remove the retaining screws securing the shroud to the bumper.

Step 1: Grab the retainer holding the light bulb.
Step 2: Gently twist the retainer couter clockwise.
Step 3: Pull the retainer back from the lens assembly.
Step 4: Remove the old light bulb and install the new light bulb.
Step 5: Reinstall the retainer into the lens assembly.
Step 6: Switch on the fog lamps to test the new bulb.
Step 7: Reinstall the shroud.
 
Replace a Faulty Switch
Step 1: Disassemble the instrument panel around the switch.
Step 2: One may have to pry the switch assembly from the instrument panel or remove the retaining screws holding the switch in place.
Step 3: Gently pull the wiring out until the connector appears.
Step 4: Unplug the switch from the connector. Check the condition of the wiring while it is exposed.
Step 5: Plug in the new switch.
Step 6: Switch on the fog lamps for a test.
Step 7: Reassemble the instrument panel in the reverse order.
The fog lights are optional or standard equipment for many cars sold today. Visibility is one of the main issues of driving. When one is able to determine what type of fault is causing the fog lamps not to work, he will be able to take steps to make the proper repair.

Changing a Damaged Lens Assembly
Step 1: Remove the protective shroud (if the vehicle's bumper has one) by removing the retaining screws securing the shroud to the bumper.
Step 2: Grab the retainer holding the light bulb.
Step 3: Gently twist the retainer counter clockwise.
Step 4: Pull it back from the lens assembly.
Step 5: Remove the lens assembly by removing the retaining screws.
Step 6: Put the new lens assembly in the place of the old one.
Step 7: Reinstall the retainer into the new lens assembly.
Step 8: Reinstall the shroud.

Minor Electrical Faults:
Changing a Blown Fuse
Step 1: Locate the fuse block. It could be located under the instrument panel and or under the hood. Modern cars have more than one fuse block. Consult the owner's manual to find the correct fuse block.
Step 2: Remove the cover from the fuse block.
Step 3: Use a fuse puller to remove the fuse. The filament of a blown fuse will be broken.
Step 4: Replace the old fuse with new fuse which has the same amperage rating as the blown fuse.
Step 5: Switch on the fog lamps to test the fuse.
